Dining on Dogs in China: Dog Days of Yulin (Part 1/2)

I’d say we’re about 50 meters from where
all those live dogs are being sold, and just down here you’ve got this. [NOISE]
I’m just watching a bunch of people roasting their dogs. Oh my God. [NOISE] [MUSIC] The Annual Dog Meat Festival upsets
practically everyone who isn’t taking part in it.>>[FOREIGN].>>[FOREIGN].>>Animal rights activists say the dog
meat trade is cruel, unhygienic, and poorly regulated, with stolen pets and strays making their way to the dinner
table. Despite all this and spurred on by fierce backlash from across
China, some Yu Lin locals say this year they’re even more set on plowing
down man’s best friend by the cage full. [MUSIC] Yi Lin is a town of six million not far
from China’s southern border of Vietnam. We arrived the day before summer solstice
and everyone was getting ready to celebrate by
killing some dogs. So we’re just heading down to Donkor
Shicheng, which is one of the main meat markets here
in Yu Lin. It’s where a lot of people obviously buy
their meat so I am hoping that there’ll be guys buying
dogs in preparation for the festival. [SOUND]>>Oh my God.>>[FOREIGN].>>The smell is just. I don’t know. Cuz it’s meaty. It’s like horribly, horribly meaty, and
it’s kind of mixed with that familiar dog meat smell that just really
turns your stomach. But, you know, I don’t hang out in meat
markets that often, and a lot of Chinese meat markets, to be fair,
are pretty explicit. So maybe this is normal. Maybe my stomach would be turned anyway
even if it were, even if I didn’t see so many dead dogs. [FOREIGN].>>[FOREIGN].>>[FOREIGN_LANGUAGE]>>[FOREIGN_LANGUAGE]>>[FOREIGN_LANGUAGE]>>[FOREIGN_LANGUAGE]>>[FOREIGN_LANGUAGE]>>[FOREIGN_LANGUAGE]
>>[FOREIGN_LANGUAGE].>>[FOREIGN] [NOISE].>>Where do they come from? [FOREIGN] [FOREIGN_LANGUAGE].>>[FOREIGN_LANGUAGE]
>>[FOREIGN_LANGUAGE].>>[FOREIGN_LANGUAGE].>>When I just asked the guy delivering
the dogs where they came from he said they’re from Gua Jo outside of the
province but no one seems to be able to give me an
exact answer of where these dogs are from. [NOISE]>>[FOREIGN_LANGUAGE].>>Everything must go into whatever their
cooking. There’s they’re just kinda blindly
chopping, I’m really scared to open my mouth because
I think there’s gonna like [LAUGH] dog meat going inside it. [NOISE]
[FOREIGN_LANGUAGE].>>[FOREIGN_LANGUAGE]>>[FOREIGN_LANGUAGE]
>>[FOREIGN_LANGUAGE].>>[FOREIGN_LANGUAGE].>>[FOREIGN_LANGUAGE].>>[NOISE]
It seems like people are very much aware of the bad name they’re getting for
eating dog but they’re very defensive and quite hostile
towards us. On the other hand they say that it’s their
right to eat dog. Because living conditions have got better
in China, they’re able to eat dog more and they’re not forcing anyone else to eat
them. [MUSIC] The butchery is bleak enough, but it’s the
downtown market where people are buying the freshest, locally sourced produce that
really messes with your head.>>[FOREIGN_LANGUAGE].>>For these actually to be fair look more
like the kind of dogs I was expecting to be breed for eating. [MUSIC] Apart from that guy over there who looks
distinctly like my bijou freeze. [MUSIC] [NOISE] [MUSIC] [FOREIGN_LANGUAGE] [MUSIC] [FOREIGN]. I thought I was talking to her pet and then she said yeah someone wants to buy
him I’ll sell him for food. [FOREIGN] [FOREIGN_LANGUAGE].>>[FOREIGN_LANGUAGE]>>[FOREIGN_LANGUAGE]>>[FOREIGN_LANGUAGE]>>[FOREIGN_LANGUAGE]>>[FOREIGN_LANGUAGE]
>>[FOREIGN_LANGUAGE].>>[FOREIGN]>>It’s a business. They want to sell the pets whether they’re
as pets or whether they’re as meat, they just wanna
sell them. Shandai is an activist spearheading the
Anti Dog Festival movement. I caught her wandering around the market
looking teary. So what are you doing here today?>>Well today I’m checking the markets, checking the data about the dog cat meat
trade. According to our investigation dog and
cats was killed in the dog meat festival over 50000 piece.>>Wow.>>Yeah very huge.>>Over 50000 and so that but that’s dogs
and cats.>>Yeah that includes some cats. Yeah, cats about 10000 pieces.>>So about 40000 dogs killed.>>Yeah, yeah. huh.
>>So do you think the festival is bigger than it was last year? I don’t think that it’s bigger than last
year. I think the Yulin government have do do
something and it worked. We also can find some some it was
controlled step-by-step. But however in these dog trade markets I
just wonder because, this is not the legal trade. The volume is not so small.>>Mm.
>>Yeah and I found some dog that were so old and sick and you might get some sick,
so I think that you need to get more strict
control here.>>Can you just explain to us you said
they’re illegal can you explain that?>>The trading here is illegal because you
don’t see any supervision here. There’s no evidence showing that these
dogs belong to the traders. [FOREIGN_LANGUAGE].>>Do you have any demonstrations planned
for anything for today?>>I think maybe later we’ll do it. Yeah. [MUSIC]>>We’re just on our way over to the city
government. We’ve heard that they’re animal rights
protesters demonstrating over there. I have to say up til now their attempts
have been a little bit shambolic so not quite sure what to expect. [MUSIC]

    Watch Part 2 now – https://youtu.be/iv8Z4u5ZqWw

  2. 3. Stupid stupid 😠 Chinese and Japanese people get one step close to my dogs u coming home with a burnt private broke down teeth and with one arm promise me u gone come one step to my dogs say good bye to ur life 💯

  4. Fucking greedy little shits!! Like there’s nothing else to eat out there in the world , the torture they put these pets through just to feed the belly’s wow

  5. Yes I get other people eat chickens and cows but dogs and cats like tea? It’s not even that it’s how they torture the animals…like boil them alive? Don’t these people feels anything?

  6. But this is what they eat !!! The torture and steal is wrong . But a man from India would be as disappointed to see Americans and their beef burgers…

  7. Just chinese people's have left machines and vehicles .. but soon upgrade will come of machine and vehicles eating

  8. Why why can Chinese people eat regular food instead of eating dogs and cats like, how would you like it if people eat you💁‍♀️💁‍♀️💁‍♀️

  9. My only hope is there are some people buying the dogs from the stores to save them from being put on the chopping block
Edit: you know, buying them ALIVE

  10. if u want to keep your tradition. then at least raise your own dog. dont steal other people pet like that… for many people pet is family…

  11. This is wat happens to the pigs and cows in west .

But when questions raised they laugh . Karma gotchu Bitches.

  12. I read an article about dead-baby meat trade in some city areas in China! If it's true, we are talking about non-Human race!

  13. Its culture, im sure if chicken meat can be artificially created chickens would be treated as children here in the west in the near future, and those future generations would see us as barbaric monsters for killing chickens and treating them the way we do now.

  14. I love the hypocrisy I'm sure there are hundreds of ppl in the comments eat cow, pigs, birds and other animals but get made when they eat dog

  15. I hope they get a dog disease when eating them, like rabies or something and it kills the whole strand of their families. Isn't there enough things to consume in the world? Fking barbaric

  16. See how narrow mindness for different calture the western people can be. They went to other countries, humiliating local people by their own stupid standard, just because they are arrogant of their culture thinking they are the best. Imagine when Indian get strong enough, satirizging people who eat cows. Shame on you arrogant animals.

  17. People who are disliking this video,it is because we dont like dogs getting cooked, but it doesnt mean we dont like your channel, you should go upload more of these vids to expose this gross nation

  18. Its their unique and vibrant culture and you cant judge them for observing their culture and it must be protected
    Liberals are hypocrites

  19. Pigs are smarter than dogs but we eat them
Face it animal rights are about saving the cute and cuddly creatures
Just like we listen to pretty people more than we listen to the ugly or plain

  20. China is not the only dog eating country. Believe it or not, Switzerland is among a list of few nations that also consumes feline and canine meats. Gedörrtes Hundefleisch: a well-known Swiss Recipe for Dogmeat. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9pXFy0Kl9k https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q9lPyT0HUIE

  21. Well look you can't judge them like that. Animals are animals long ago don't be surprised if your ancestors ate everything. Also the same way you see eating dogs is bad is how some see eating turkey is bad and eating pigs is bad and eating camels is bad. Like you shouldn't be like that, think of the general ideas of other people not just your people, that would make you a villain. They have families who are probably more caring than your family, so stop demonizing people.

  22. Some people eat mice, rats, horses, goat, gator, seals, ect… It just depends on your beliefs, culture, and area where it's common place.

  23. The problem is that they torture the dogs and let them slowly suffer to death. This is Inhumane and very cruel that people can treat other creatures like this. My heart cries for these dogs and cats

  24. As long as they farm raised the dogs, it would not be an issue. The same as we farm raised chickens or cows.
However, one issue is that people steal other peoples pet dogs and sell them to the meat market.
